School Bus Safety

Sep 13, 2012 (0) comment

School is starting up again and it’s time for the school buses to start making their rounds. They’ll be coming and going all day – picking up and dropping off students. While it’s absolutely wonderful that the school bus is available to take your kids to and from school, it sure can be frustrating when you get caught driving behind a school bus, can’t it?

When you find yourself behind a bus and those yellow lights come on, slow down. That sounds too easy, but you would be surprised at how many people use those lights as an excuse to speed up and try to get around the bus. Not only is it against the law, it’s not safe. It’s not safe to do that when a traffic light turns yellow, but it’s even more unsafe to do it when the yellow lights are on a school bus.

Those yellow lights indicate that children will be either getting on or getting off the bus within the next minute. There could be a child within a very short radius of the bus. If you were to speed up past the bus, you risk hitting a child. You know that it will only be a matter of 15-30 seconds until the yellow lights turn to red and you will be forced to stop anyway.

If you get caught behind a school bus today, make a note of the time on your clock. Instead of worrying about being late today, slow down and just do not follow that route tomorrow at the same time. Avoiding school buses altogether can make your trip much quicker and safer. Look at your slow commute today as a great time to relax and catch your breath instead of getting worked up about all the stop and go. Keep our kids safe.
